Isola Dovarese and the Palio

Isola Dovarese and the Palio

The palio recalls the period of belonging of the village to the Gonzagesco State in the second half of the fifteenth century, celebrating the coming of the Mantuan court in the form of a public feast, in honor of the Marquises Ludovico Gonzaga and Barbara of Brandenburg.

The Marquis Ludovico went to Isola Dovarese several times, while the Marchesa Barbara stayed in Isola in 1458 together with her daughter Dorotea, at that time promised to marry Galeazzo Maria Sforza, future duke of Milan and son of Francesco Sforza and Bianca Maria Visconti.

The chronological background for the reconstruction of the village, the taverns and culinary recipes, the costumes embraces a wider period in order to draw on a greater number of historical and iconographic sources and documents. This period starts from the year of the oath of allegiance of Isola Dovarese to Ludovico Gonzaga, II marquis of Mantua, 1451, until 1490, the year of the arrival of Isabella d'Este in Mantua.

The program of the event is to be defined.
